Default Transmission Problem!!

My transmission is seriously messed up. Sometimes it starts off like what feels like 2nd gear. Yesterday, I pulled out of my driveway, put it in drive and accelerated, it just revved and nothing happened. I looked at the gear selector on the dash and there was blocks around all of them, as if they were all selected. I put it back in park and back into drive, still didn't work. I put it in park, turned it off, waited 15 seconds, restarted and it worked fine.

Anyone know what this could be. I will call Audi soon. This started a few days ago, my wife was complaing of shuddering sort of, but I couldn't understand with her description. But yesterday I felt it.

Sometimes it's fine she says, sometimes it is really messed up.

Steve

Default Check the A6 forum. We have posted several viable causes for you. Keep us posted.....

Many of us including me, have the A6 4.2 and have virtually the same tranny/motor and we will be interested in your problem/solution. Best of luck!

Default Same thing happened to me.

The situation you are seeing in your gear select window is your computer telling you there is a transmission problem and to get this sucker in for service. It is intended by Audi to do this when a problem occurs.

My problem was a water leak in the firewall which allowed water to pool up under the passenger seat and fry my transmission computer. The leak was fixed and repairs done under warranty of course and I was glad to find out that my transmission itself was never actually in any trouble.

Have Audi check it out and get it towed in if you are in doubt. Good luck.

Default Re:Gee Bart... You just have bad luck w/water leaking into your car....

Didn't waterleaking into your previous A6 4.2 cause you to return that car to Audi and purchase your A8??? Otherwise, how's the A8 doing??

Default The A8 doesn't leak....

That was the A6 4.2 I was referring too. Sorry, should have made that more clear. Same drivetrain though.

The A8 has been excellent. A few minor issues;

1.) A Seattle water rat took up residence under my hood one eve and munched a few wires.

2.) Twice now, after sitting for more than a day I have went to start it and the motor sounded like an old Chevy with no oil for a few seconds. This scared me but it cleared up within moments and hasn't done it since. Sounded VERY ugly though.

3.) The seats just aren't up to par for quality control. The driver seat squeaks constantly and the passenger seat makes loud pops when a person weighing over 200 lbs. (Read this as every single one of my drinking/golfing/card-playing buddies.) sits in it.

I love the car though, and I love it more every time I drive it. I look forward to long hauls like 6-700 miles in a day. I drive from the NW down to the bay area with regularity and I never even think of splitting them up into a two day journey.

Just to reiterate, the A8 leaks no water and never has. I want to help Audi clean up their old and outdated rep for poor quality as best I can. I just wish other A8 drivers liked to wave a bit more, seems like they have no idea another A8 is in their presence and what a rare situation that is.

Default The wave...

No, not an A8 but I've tried to wave at every Audi I see, and...... only once did the other notice my presence - some guy an a 5000S looked like he won the lottery seeing my A6! Grinning ear to ear, turning to stare as he passed (was in exit lane don't blame me!) ... but A4 people have been oblivious... fellow A6s could care less and the A8s well, maybe they don't recognize either of mine as an Audi! [g]

Glad to hear you A8 is running well, or at least better!

Default Re: The wave...

I haven't gotten any waves from other Audi owners but I have been approached in a few parking lots and have received complements on my car. I have also seen my car being "oggled" while sitting in a restaurant where the car was visible from where I was seated.
