Check engine does work (its been on before) but currently not coming on. Hoping to thoroughly clean the plug and try again tonight. Will post results tomorrow.

I took the plug apart again last night, and thoroughly cleaned it with degreaser; dried the plug and reconnected it. Prior to doing this, I had a very hard time getting the car up on ramps once again, due to the vehicle being in limp mode. However, after cleaning, the vehicle was once again immediately fine. I took it on a 12-mile drive which included various different speeds, hills, stop lights, and highway driving. The transmission was completely normal. We drove the car a few hours later on a 7-mile drive, and once again it was fine. BTW, there were no OBD-II codes and the CEL illuminates during startup as it should. Fingers still crossed, but its got to be this plug, since as soon as I clean it the car is fine. I'll keep driving it and keep this post up to date. Since these 32V engines do seem to leak quite a bit, and the plug in question was literally dripping engine oil from the pins, hopefully other owners experiencing limp mode will have the same luck I seem to have had.

Good deal....hope that solves it.
You are very lucky indeed.
At just 100K, you may have a lot of good driving ahead of you before any trans mechanical problems. I know of some pre-facelifts going to 190K...but, unfortunately, quite a few that went at 120-150K (some earlier)...thus, Tozo's assumption (with no other info), from symptoms alone, the broken clutch basket...all too common.
Cheers.

Two weeks ago, on the way home from an hour drive south, our '99 A8 4.2L would suddenly barely move away from the light at an intersection. I noticed the gear indicator in the screen showed all gear selections lit. Pulling over and restarting the car cured it for the ride home. However, in subsequent days the car did it again. A restart again cured it until 3 days ago the car experienced this same problem just pulling out of our street. Restarting would only cure the problem for a few seconds before all the gear selections lit again, and the car wouldn't go forward. We got it back home by driving in reverse.
So, reverse works totally fine. If you start the car and put the transmission into Drive, you feel first gear engage but then right off the car will barely move and all the gears light up.
How can the torque convertor be junk if reverse works fine? Fluid was changed around 10k miles ago at a cost of over $600. The only issue the trans has had is hunting between gears during certain speed ranges, but it has always done this. Car has 100k miles on it now.

I solved this issue by replacing the speed sensor by dropping the valve body.
