Transmission shifting to 5th and bouncing back to 4th around 65 mph
I am posting this about my mother's 98 A8 4.2. I took it on a roadtrip last weekend, and noticed it trying to shift to 5th around 65, RPMs being too low, and bouncing back to 4th, only to try again a few seconds later. The transmission shifts fine, at 75+ 5th gear is ok too.
What it seems to me is that 5th gear is too steep a gear for the speed that the car is trying to shift into it for. It is annoying and I think going to damage/wear out the transmission sooner. Are there any VAG changes that can be done to raise shift points, or software updates from the dealer to fix this?
Common problem?

Re: A recode to 00011 or 00001 will help, but not completely cure, this problem.
I belive it is a faulty Electronic Control Unit. Mines does the same thing and it is getting much worse, as it continuously can not locate the correct gear. Audi wants $2000 for the chip, but you can repair it or buy a used one.
