Also, I would like to obtain a copy of the ZF literature

It didn't make any difference in operation. It was about $75 from the dealer as I recall.
I will be back on Wednesday and could ship it to you then.

The friendly neighborhood authorized ZF repair facility has been generous to a fault. A replacement unit is in transit.
Thanks for all responses!
The excitement is killing me,;-) A decision is needed regarding retaining the present wire harness, or replacing with the "new" harness attached to the replacement VB. There is indication that the later model wiring casts error codes on older TCU's
Bench evaluation of the solenoids per the Bentley does not indicate any obvious differences.
But on newer tcm's, the resistance between the two power supply terminals is infinite, while the older units the same test is to show only a few ohms max.
Hmm...

I wonder why the comment about incompatability? Perhaps some missed detail.
My plan is to have the two units on the bench and ring out the wiring pin by pin.
We shall see.

then I swapped VB 02' - 97'. There are no major difference between the trannys only a few minor things like different clutch F piston, breather on the top (97 breather had a stooopid check valve). The tranny rebuild kit is the same 97'-03'. VB rebuild kit is the same too. Do you have two wiring harness?

Tozo
Your experience gives me confidence.
Yes, I have two harnesses.
Well two when I take the VB out of the DTE transmission that's in the car. Then I will have the two VB's (DTE and FUN) complete with harness, solenoids and sensor, side by each on the work bench.
The FUN unit will go in, "just to see".
(Interesting that the transmission series is FUN!) The DTE will be on the bench perhaps permanently. It may go back as a "rebuildable core".
Like your work TOZO, that newer VB may be just the ticket to effect the transmission improvements desired with only R&R procedures.
There may be other benefits to be had through "modification" of the VB for pressure or flow, but......
Actually there are quite a few parts different in the later VB's. I did a part by part comparison , I wrote up the part numbers with the document is on my laptop at home.
With a snow storm predicted for tomorrow, I won't get underneath this week.
Skiing is still a better deal !
