Transmission thumping - continue

Hello All,
I just finished reading the thread on the transmission thumping and wow - we are making progress. Maybe in the next 6 months, if we keep brain storming on it we might find an answer. I have a 98 model and the thumping started around 80K, did everything suggested and still nothing.
What we know:
1. Replacing tranny fluid does not fix it
2. Replacing the tranny does not fix it
So the problem is not in the tranny.
Might be:
1. ECU programming - why would it change
2. Fuel being cut off to quickly
3. Torque convert slipping
4. ?
What about fuel filters?
I just think we can figure this out.
Thanks and I look forward to your thoughts.
Thanks,
Sawyer

I had a thumping which got progressively worse as I was driving the car home after just picking it up in Fla. Long story BUT it turned out to be the fuel pump relay which went bad. Every time I read about the thumping issues here, I couldn't help but think about what happened to me and that maybe it's not a transmission issue but rather a fuel problem. The symptoms that have been described were exactly as happened to me. The only difference is that I ultimately got stranded. Not an answer, but I agree that it might be worth looking at other systems (fuel, electrical) as well. What a huge victory it would be for everyone if it turned out to be something else...

My car was one of the first to start thumping back three years ago. I asked the forum back then but nobody had the problem at that time. I then took the car to Fred Baker Audi and they couldn't diagnose the problem after trying for several days. They ended up calling Germany and talking to the Audi/ZF technician.
They came back with the diagnosis that it was a defective torque converter. They said that they couldn't just replace the torque converter since the pump would start to leak. Their solution was to replace the whole transmission for about $9000. I wasn't prepared to spend this amount of money for a minor inconvenience.
I remember reading about a guy who had a transmission shop replace just his torque converter and it solved his thumping problem.
I suspect that the hunting is also caused by the torque converter but I am not as sure about this. For me the hunting is much more irritating than the thumping.

On the A6's it has to be, there is a procedure on ross-tech.com but it doesn't work for our cars as I recall.
Somebody posted a month or so to turn on the ignition, and slowly press the accelerator pedal to the floor over a 30 second period and hold it, then slowly release it.....
I keep thinking I need to try that!
