Default Transmission Woes- `97 A8

After going into limp mode and parking the car, we attempted to add fluid today as Tozo suggested. The transmission initially took a liter of fluid in neutral and drive and then began to blow it out. Trans light lit up as well as all gear lights when I tried to drive it, and it slammed into gear then back to limp mode. Any diagnostics to try before towing to Audi for rebuild or am I out of luck?

I suspect you're right. I'm willing to do this but want to correct the hunting problem, sluggish response etc. Is the valve body part of the transmission?

And is now the time to put in tiptronic shifter and code for better performance, etc? Are other upgrades appropriate at the same time? Car still looks new and I've owned it 10 years....sentimental.

Default If you take it to the dealer, it will be fixed right, but you will pay more than

your car worth

That is true, however, what is a car worth that won't go forward? What are my options? I am willing to ship the car to be serviced, but one Audi dealer quoted me $4750 including labor for Audi remanufacture. I found several transmissions for less but need someone to install, code, and enlighten me of the upgrade options, etc.

I'm open to suggestions.

Default $4750 with 12 month/12,000 mile Audi warranty - I would do it

That's a good price for that service.

Agreed, that is a good price. I think it comes with 2 year warranty.

Default and the euro is worth $1.48 to our dollar (The American Peso)

so I think the cost of fixing your tranny is a terrific deal. Can you imagine what the cost of a new German car is going to be in 2008? Especially if the dollar keeps falling. Imagine the cost of importing a new tranny from Germany? Yikes!!

Is a rebuild really the way to go if more than $5000?
The wife is starting to think new car. Tranny - $5000+, T belt - $1500, Tune up - $800? and now the radio too. I like the a8. If we upgrade to a newer a8 or s8, will the transmissions soon fail like these 97 - 99's?

BTW, if AoA doesn't recognize the transmission issue, why does my local Audi dealer estimate a 97 A8 under $5000 because of the "typical transmission failure"?
