Default 8K into a 97, I don't think I would do it at this point

The car isn't worth much more than that (if that) if in good condition.

The newer cars have transmission problems, but they don't seem to happen as frequently and the hunting is gone due to drive by wire.

I'm sure they made quit a few revisions to the parts over the years.

Should I consider upgrading to tiptronic, etc. at this point? or anything else best done now?

Default Personally, I'd trade it in on an S8. I think it's a much better investment,

and you won't be plagued w/ the problems in the pre-facelift D2's. There aren't a lot of S8 tranny failure reports, and it is SO much more car. If you like the way your A8 drives, but don't want the maintenance costs, consider the S8 upgrade option. Your car was the first of this breed, and the S8 was the last. Audi is well known for engineering evolution and certain models are very special - S8 is one of them IMO.

Default sadly, an S8 with high miles is still gonna run you close to $20K (in good shape)

and if you are worried about the cost of a tranny rebuild, chances are, an S8 is out of the question. Now, granted, im quietly on the hunt for a Blk/Blk alcantara S8 myself right now (unbenounced to my wife..SHHHHHH)

I was going to try to find an S8 or RS6, but I have a 740iL to drive for now.... talk about a money pit. I wouldn't get 2K for the A8 not running as a trade-in.

I think I will look for a tranny rebuilder as Heinz suggested.... then possibly trade or sell both cars for a newer model. You can now find a D3 with high miles for the S8 cost.
