ok so im getting up there in mileage, 110,000 and and starting to worry about my tranny....it seems like there is a lot of debate and inconsistency on how long these things last and what to do as far as upkeep.
so here lies my questions...
do i change the fluid and flush the tranny?
and how long can i expect to get before it goes?
thanks,
BQ

...rolled 120k last week and have been haunted by the very same quandary.
And by the very same answer Mr. Beartrap gives vvvbelowvvv.
What to do what to do.
Hoping Gabor / Paul / Randy have an opinion on ze matter yes?
Course I have 3yrs. / unltd miles of extended warranty remaining, something tells me just sit back and ride it out.
Bueller?

I know its apples and kumquats, but I used to have a Volvo V70R and I did a flush and fill at 45K just because, and for the following months it suffered from a bit of a shift flare from 1>2>3rd. It eventually cleared and shifted great, but man o man did I loose sleep over it.
I think it was a driver adaptive TCU and it must have had a mode where hard shifts were deleted until everything went back to copacetic.
Many times manufac's like Audi,MB and Porsche claim the tranny's are sealed and DO NOT need a fluid change.
My AMG Benz has a tranny dipstick and its pink and clean. 112K miles, none of the 2 po's had receipts for tranny fluid changes and most likely I'll leave it be.
If it ain't broke ...give it more gas.

I read somewhere that the shelf life of the fluid is not lifetime and that lifetime to the dealers means for as long as the car is under warranty. If the fluid has 110K on it, you may create a problem if you change it. Fresh fluid has the property of loosening dirt and "mud". If there is a lot of it in your tranny, the new fluid may loosen some of the dirt which may move and close an "artery". Some times after you experience a problem because of a fluid change if you change the fluid again the problem goes away.
From my experience on my 325 the tranny oil cooler got clogged after a fluid change , and I ended up getting another tranny, but when I got the S8 the first thing I did was to change all the fluids. I knew about the risk I was taking but the car was a CPO so if the tranny was going to go I was covered under the warranty.
I guess its a matter of luck, how dirty the old fluid is and how much mud is in your tranny. If you are 110k highway adult milleage then you shouldn't have a lot of dirt in your tranny.
Some others say if its not broken don't fix it.
Final decision is all yours, depends how lucky you feel.

to keep the viscosity similar. It had never been changed before.
I've gone almost 20k miles and it shifts perfectly so this might be an option.

really good though considering the mileage. The fluid was dark as you would suspect. I probably added about a liter of new fluid due to the spillage.
I held my breath for the first couple of thousand miles.

GTO Evoluzine, FXX, F40GT and F50GT ... now that's a trailer! Not to mention the 288 GTO hiding to the left, and the latest of the line in front. That's worth signing for.
