Possibly a big air leak, check your intake plumbing for cracks or a disconnection. Check the PCV system too, I do not know what sort of car you have, there is more than one system but if the PCV system is not working you will idle poorly and throw codes. Some cars have a 'suction jet pump' to create crankcase vacuum, and others have a constant velocity air valve thing that can fail.

OK that year has the 'suction jet pump' that can clog or crack.
I'm still thinking you have an air leak after the MAF
Check out this part and it's hoses (same part is found on the 32v)

Also remove the intake hose between the airbox and the throttle body and look for splits, cracks, loose connections.
The breather hoses are also a problem on these cars, there is a writeup for replacing those on audipages.com you could take a look at.
A smoke test might also help, if you blow smoke at the engine you might see where it is getting drawn in where it should not be. From the sound of it, this is a big leak and hopefully not difficult to find.
Good luck,
-Joel.
