Default Unable to shift into automatic 4th gear

Hello All,

Just bought the car (1998 A8 Quattro)about a month ago and noticed tonight that I couldn't shift it into the 2nd,3rd or 4th gear location. Triptronic works great! Drive (D) works great, just can't shift down to 4th - any ideas on this!

Thanks,
Noel Sawyer

Default If you can't shift down into 4'th ...

... you must be going pretty fast. I know I can't shift from 3'rd to second when going 80 or more; haven't encountered condition to prevent shifting down into 3'rd but I think it's around 120. I can't imagine how fast you're going to not be allowed to shift from 5'th to 4'th.

Then again -- '98 == how many gears?

Well - I'm not moving at all - I'm just sitting in the driveway trying to place it into 4th - it won't go into 4th - I don't want to force it while I'm driving incase it hurts something and I'm stuck on the road waiting for a tow truck. I looked at the manual - it mentions nothing about RPM being to low.

Thanks for the Advice - it's not a big deal - I never use it - I always use triptronic on the pass - I live in the mountains in Colorado.

Thanks,

Noel Sawyer

Default That isn't right. It should move freely into all selectable positions while holding in the button.

Have the dealer fix it ASAP since it is very likely a broken piece lodged in the selection mechanism. You could also take it apart yourself to have a look it isn't very difficult.

Default I had this happen to my...

'92 100S a while back. turned out that a quarter (coin) fell into the selection mechanism as the old 100s did not have a cover like the A8s.... if the "gear selector" has the cover missing, it may be the case -- but I doubt that in this case.

Default Is it that the tip **** wont shift down period? I.E. you can only push the **** up and sits at...

neutral and cant be pushed back? I've noticed though that on mine when I am sitting there it is at 5th gear when engine is off and its at tip mode i cant shift it down, but I highly doubt what it is, if its when your driving take it to your dealer to take a look at it b/c one of my A8L's transmission broke due to a screw that got in there before it was shipped off and it wingled down to the most crucial part.
