Default Updates to the valve cover replacement guide?

Heyas! Thanks for publishing this guide. Without this and other documentation, I probably wouldn't have bought this car...

I started to do the valve cover gasket replacement today. I'm also going to get one of the rear cam seals done, too. I actually only have one valve cover gasket set, as I thought one set would include both sides of the engine, not just one I get one side of the engine done this weekend, and one the next, and do an oil change next weekend, too.

Regardless, I'm taking apart the driver's side valve cover of the A8. I found that there are six 10mm bolts holding the valve cover around the edges, not four... Also, the bolt that's closest to the firewall is really tricky to get out. I wound up breaking it loose using two extensions and a U-joint added to my 3/8"-drive socket set and then using a long, flatheaded screwdriver at a slight angle to a 3/8" drive 10mm socket. But I got it out.

The one that has me kind of stumbled is the rear breather(?) hose off of that valve cover. I can't seem to figure out the right way to break remove it, so I can pull the valve cover free and clear. Any ideas?

Thanks!

-Jon

Default I would seriously consider replacing the breather hoses too.....

they rot from the inside out, and now is the easiest time to replace the rear ones. If you replace them, then you can simply cut them off. If you can't get the part in time, try using a pair of pliers to (gently) twist the rubber hose on the metal nipple- it usually works a lot better than trying to simply pull the hose off. Getting the rear cam seals done too is also a very good idea while you're in there.

Default I'll have to find the parts... don't want to be without my car for most of the week...

Although now that I took off the belly pan to remove some tools I dropped (oops!) I think I need to do the oil cooler gaskets, too.

One project at a time. Just want to get the driver's side finished first, and waste next weekend with the passenger side. I didn't realize the valve cover gaskets were only one side per set

It's a T-27 bit to remove the rear cam seal covers. I don't have a good socket bit. I'm trying to use a 1/4" screw-driver T-27 bit in a 1/4" socket with my ratchet, and it just isn't working too well. I don't know where my T27 bit from my transmission adventure went. Argh.

The rear cam seal covers may be T-30 if memory serves me. I am getting old, however :-)

T-27 worked on the driver's side; passenger side seems to strip the bolt!

Rear cam cover seal bolts are T-30's on the passenger side.
