Default upper oil pan gasket - notes

Lots of work, but pretty straightforward. You must remove the subframe first. There are bolts that are completely blocked and there's no way around it. See Tozo's Trans removal write-up on audipages for this part.

- Remove lower pan and gasket
- Remove oil pump baffle (brown plastic part)

Once all of that is out of the way, there are lots of fasteners to unbolt. Most are 5mm hex bolts similar to the lower oil pan and some are regular bolts which are fairly obvious. A couple of the hex are recessed so you'll need an extension to get them out (2 vertical ones as I recall). The Bentley has NO procedure for this, just an exploded diagram.

I laid out the new gasket and as I removed each fastener, I placed it into the corresponding hole until I knew that I had all of the fasteners accounted for. The only problem was I could not see enough of the old gasket to get the orientation correct. I believe that in this pic, the gasket is upside down.

Two tools you'll absolutely need:

1) A 5mm Allen "T" handle with the ball socket. I've never needed one before and only had the straight set. There are 2 fasteners that you need to remove at an angle.

2) On the drivers side, there's a (13 or 14mm) bolt that cannot be removed with a socket because there isn't enough clearance. Sears sells a "Socket cap set" - #43303, $12 bucks. It's an insert which allows you to remove a socket using a wrench. You MUST have this or you'll never get that bolt out. Fortunately, this I had on hand.

If yours is leaking, you can try and torque it (didn't work in this case) because you have nothing to loose. I verified the leak with a black light dye kit and it was flowing pretty steadily. I would strongly suggest changing this gasket if you have the subframe out for some other reason.

The gasket is about $60 and make sure you order a new o-ring for the dipstick tube.

Default pic of the upper pan housing

Thanks to Simon, "Always Overcharged" for sending me the Elsa docs last month. No real "procedure" there either but I was able to piece together what was needed with the Bentley diagram.

Default Ah HA! "His" name is SIMON! Got it, thanks! 8-) Remember I hate screen names heh heh...

But we've still yet to learn why he's "Always Overcharged"?

And a few days last month or so, he was "Allways Overcharged" and then (IIRC) simply "Overcharged".

C'mon Simon, let's have it?

Heh heh.

Great pics / write up btw Dave - hoping I'll not have to "go there", but we all know how THAT ends up working out - d'oh...

Default It is allways overcharged because when I first got the A8 and knew

nothing about them I seemed to be being stung on parts labour and for everything-Then I found Vag com and this site.
What a difference-the name just stuck-the rip offs dissapeared.
Theses cars are fairly rare here and there is a lack of techs who are competent to work on them so they are afraid of them and charge accordingly-now I diagnose and ask them to fix only what is needed and supply some proceedures etc and part #.
That said the car has been fairl reliable since getting all back in spec

Thanks for playin along, Simon 8-). Just passin the time 'tis all...

Default Nice, so do you think this is the source of the leak in the picture I posted?

If so, I'll have to have this done next time I get the tranny rebuilt.....oh wait, did that last year.

Let me know....I will put this one up on audipages.....can you take a picture of the few tools you mention?

Default No, the TB leak (not sure what to call it) is something else. Sure, I'll add to this a bit...

and we can make it a procedure. I think I have a few more of the upper pan too.
