i 3RD that statement. www.audipages.com has saved my *** a number of times and gave me a really good understanding of the A8. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. FYI, the only truly major issue with a D2 A8 (97-99) is the dreaded HUNT and THUNK of the transmission, usually caused by the Torque Converter going bad, among a slew of other reasons. If you do get an A8, BUY AN AFTERMARKET WARRANTY. and then get your tranny looked at asap if its starts "hunting" for gears or "thunking". GOOD LUCK with you search. I just got a 98 A8 a few weeks ago and LOVE it.

Would really love to try a rebuilt valve body.....but do I want to dump the money into the transmission or dump the money into the car?
Have a rebuilt torque converter and it still humps and thumps because something is telling it to lock and unlock!

AH, so the TC is NOT the culprit? Paul, its seems you are the expert on all that is the A8...*bows* I am taking mine in on monday to see if i can get the dealer to fix something tranny-wise under my warranty...i am getting a little hunting and a weird shuddering at 2000rpms, maybe i can have them trouble shoot the VALVE BODY!! i wonder if that is replaced if the notorious thumping and hunting would cease? I will mention it to the dealer and report back in a week or so.

ok, so when getting my tranny looked at i should have them replace the TC and the VB? I will ask them to do it but how do they know if it is in fact BAD? How can i prove to them that THIS is the problem and the fix for the tranny hunt?

I noticed the rough idle in drive goes away if I place the shifter in N (at a stop). Prior to this discovery, I was ready to get a set of new spark plugs. New TC not too long ago.
