Finally got to the bottom of the intermittent ABS warning light and the car going into limp mode problem that I was experiencing. Thought it worth posting this just in case someone else experiences the same problem in the future. VAG-COM codes were 18047 and 18264. It was all down to a short on the cable between the engine control module and the throttle unit. The cable had been squeezed too tightly into a restraining clip and it had worn through the outer sheef and one of the wires inside. Glad to get to the bottom of that one!
