Default Visiting the Big Apple

Lo All,

I am bringing my wife over to New York to celebrate her 50th Birthday and would like some advice on what to do. We have 6 days, won't be hiring a car as we are pathological walkers, ) and have planned so far:
1/2 day central park exploration.
Helicopter trip up the Hudson.
Pay respects at World Trade Centre Memorial
Shopping at Macy's, Fifth Avenue and The Diamond District.
A Broadway show (Chicago)
Chinatown (shopping and dinning experience)
Train out of Central station for an out and back trip - open to suggestions.
That's about all we have thought of. Any advice on things to do and restaurants to eat at would be appreciated.

The last time I was in New York I was with the Navy and I doubt the wife would appreciate the 'places of interest' I went to then! ;o)

Mike

Default McSorley's Ale House

Reportedly the oldest bar in NY ... but you can get a great burger there too.
More importantly, order A beer and they give you two. Then you will want another. and so on.

Default this PASS will save u alot of money and shorten your wait in line

make certain to purchase your statue of liberty tickets early from the time square place, b/c the line to purchase ticket at the statue itself is over 2hrs long. also if u want to go inside liberty herself, you need to get tickets much in advance (i think u have to go to this site: https://www.statuereservations.com/index1.html )

if u want broadway tickets, most are soldout except for individual tickets scattered throughout the venue.... use a friendly agency for your favorite show tickets, such as superstartickets.com (coupon code: superstar99.. will give u $15bucks off)

hotels cost a darn fortune in nyc this time of year... i use kayak.com for the best rates (they compare all the leading online reseller/agency)

hope this helps.<ul><li><a href="http://www.explorerpass.com/newyorkcity/index.html">new york explorer pass</a></li></ul>

Default Pizza...Museums...shopping and more...

NYC has something for Everyone... depends what you like...I've lived here all my life and here are somethings I like...

Grimaldi's Pizza under the Brooklyn Bridge on Old Fulton Street, Then stroll down to the water front for ice cream and great views of the Manhattan Skyline. Grimaldi's is popular so go for lunch or earlier than 4pm for dinner. If you're athletic take the train to City Hall and walk over the Brooklyn bridge to the place. You wont forget it.

Lombardi's Pizza at 32 Spring street is also good, after the pizza you can stroll around "The Village"

Check out the Metropolitan Museum, there's something for everyone, weapons, musical instruments, furniture, architecture, and of course paintings of all sorts.

Central Park during the day is full of life, lots to see and do. There's a Zoo, a theater and lots of areas to explore, bring your comfortable shoes.

Visit the Chelsea or Unions Square markets. Farmers from the out lying areas bring there finest produce into the city for all to Enjoy.

Try a comedy club, since the weather is nice all the comedians are back in town from LA and the comedy clubs are Jumping. There are clubs all over NYC, look for bigger clubs that have famous headliners like Caroline's on Broadway

Visit McDougall Street, Quite a night scene for bars, cheap food and music. It's a college area because the kids from NYU flood in at night. I like to pop in for a Falafel and Blues band once in awhile.

Visit wall street or the Financial district, walk around during lunch time when everyone is out on the street, the have a somber moment at Ground Zero.

Horse Racing... Saturday, June 7 there's the Belmont Stakes. This year it's going to be Nuts! There could be a Tripple Crown this year. Even if you don't see the stakes "the track" is a good time any day. Plan to take the Long Island Rail Road and then a cab to the grounds.

Take the train out of Manhattan and see a Yankee or Mets game. Last time you're be able too see the old stadiums. Check out the house that Ruth built before it's gone.

Take the the Train to Coney Island, you can play carnival games, ride the Cyclone, walk along the beach and get a Nathan's hot dog. Go in the early evening around dusk but before dark.

Pick a play on Broadway, the Disney productions are good but "The Theater" is not my thing

Biking...rent a bike... Start at Hundson river park near ground zero, this is where the rich keep their Yachts, ride up the west side bike path, no cars, and you'll pass so much including the dock where the Titanic was supposed to arrive. It's still there and you can still make out where it say's "White Star Line" Then you'll pass, christopher street, queer pier, the Chelsea Pier sports complex, the PST or Passenger ship terminal which is nice if the ships are in. Too bad the Intrepid is closed for repairs. Then you can visit central park on a bike which is good because the park is huge.

Have a laugh and visit a high end department store like Barney's There will be more fofo dogs in the store than people. You can check out what a $1200 shirt looks like and try on some $600 jeans. I like Macy's NYC on 34th street, very nice, historic and the department store that started it all.

Avoid Canal street unless you looking for junky china stuff, fake watches, perfume or handbags

Avoid little Italy, it's not what it used to be and is basically a tourist trap now. There are still a few good place I still Visit "Benito II" and "La Mela" once in awhile. If you want fine Italian look in the village or visit Arthur Ave in the Bronx.

South Street seaport is a waste of space.

China town is filthy, I dont go anymore.

Email if you want more info...

Default You covered most of the right bases - I would add:

- Statue of Liberty
- carriage ride is good way to see Central Park
- Tavern on the Green is great place to dine ^there^
- aircraft carrier (forget which) should still be docked along West Side Highway area - cool things on board for a former Navy guy

I'll be visiting clients there this Tue / Wed and am grabbing a brew or seven with some other Audiots in the area there - if that coincides with yer travels and you had a get out of jail free card for an evening.

Enjoy your trip, regardless! Happy bday to wifey...

Default I like the more divey places...

The Peculiar Pub on Bleeker and Mamoun's Falafel on MacDougal St (the place to be after bar time in the Village.)

Caracas Arepa Bar and the nearby Bourgeois Pig Cafe, near Tompkins Sq. Park (the park is a little too gritty for me but there are cool places nearby.)

The rooftop deck at the Delancey at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge, great place to hang out at sundown and beyond.

Farther afield, the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Astoria is great for some Czech food outside on a nice day.<ul><li><a href="http://www.bohemianhall.com/home.htm">Bohemian Beer Garden</a></li></ul>

Default Son Cubano is a MUST ! ....

One of THE best restaurants in NYC. Since you're already going to be on the West Side Hwy for the heli rides its located on the border of Chelsea and the Meat Packing District.

Its uber stylish, in a old Havana kind of way. Beautiful people everywhere, but the food is exemplary. Best Salmon I've ever had, bar-none.

Priced very reasonably. IIRC its on 14th off the WS Hwy.

You could do your 911 visit,Heli Ride and Son Cubano dinner all in a day. Very minimal distance between the 3 stops.

Have fun.

PS- The West Side Hwy is where all of NYC's exotic cars hang out on weekends. I've seen it all there.Almost like a car show if you catch the right time of day.
