I brought in my car to get this checked out and they said that the wheel bearing was shot. good thing it made it cross country. I had them check into this creaking that was coming from the engine bay...... $2500 later they say that the ?cam shaft tensioner? has failed!
I asked of there was any overlapping labor for the timing belt or anything else that i should do right now while they are tearing stuff down.
They guy said NO, is this true? They are ordering the parts and will get back to me.
For a wheel bearing and tensioner job they are booking like 20hrs of labor?? I dont know if i care cause the warrenty company should pay for it but i want to know if they are being honest.

The wheel bearing is MAYBE 2 hours labor, max. I've never heard of a cam shaft tensioner in these engines, just the timing belt tensioner. Each set of camshafts has a chain tying them together, but I don't believe that there is a tensioner for either one of them. I just looked at ETKA and neither the 32 valve or the 40 valve engines have anything called a cam tensioner. I would definitely get a better description of what they "think" the problem is (other than that their wallets are too thin).

Mr. Stammler and his wife in the VIP tent at the World Cup Races in Beaver Creek this year. (Miller/Rhalves 1-2 and 2-1 in the downhill and GS!!!). They seemed to be very nice people, if a little on the aged side ;-) He indicated that he drove a new 2006 A8 up to the races, and both he and his wife said they loved it. I've never been to their dealership though, too far away for me.
