He used an automated machine to do a trial cut in a valet key blank they had there and it was close, but not identical. Apparently the "key code" is needed to program this "CNC" type of key cutter. I think it provides some kind of baseline template for the machine to start with. He doesn't have a manual machine any longer. Can I find this code with VAG COM or should I try to find a locksmith with an old school manual machine?

What year car?
If it's a US car and 00 and newer, forget it, you'll need the stealer as it will have to coded to the ECU and instrument cluster (along with all your other keys at the same time).
If you have a pre facelift car.....I know the dealer can cut it for you no problem.

It's a 98.
I bought these so I could piece together an extra key.<ul><li><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&ru=http%3 A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll% 3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D290152193 778%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1&item=29015219377

The locksmith I've used was able to make me a key just using the spare that I had, the car is a 2001 A8L....

that's correct but.......
he should be able to read it using his laser cutting machine (assuming that the 98 uses laser cut key as mine 99 does). I had keys made just a few weeks ago using blanks I bought on Ebay. No problems whatsoever.
