What is a "breaker" D2 A8 worth in parts?

The transmission is headed south on my 1999 A8, goes into limp mode easily ... only other thing wrong with it is that upper control arms will need to be replaced (rest of suspension is just fine).
I have been told that if I want the maximum for this vehicle, I should part it out, selling it separately, since the engine is still in perfect condition, has a nearly-new MAF on it, etc.
I'd be happy to get $5k for it as one piece, but am intrigued as to how much I can get for it as parts.
Has anyone parted out their D2 A8 before?

I'm going to say it's not worth much.....and to get $5K out of it in parts, I think you would be very lucky to achieve that in one year's time.
If it was a car that had a good transmission, that's worth $1500 right there. There is no market for a used A8 engine. Or at least I don't think so.

with a bad tranny you might not get $2k...being that it costs at least that much to rebuild a tranny (and thats if you send it to Tozo...good luck anywhere else).

I took it out for a 20-minute run tonight.
This morning I got limp mode, but it had been parked on an incline, nose pointing down, and not driven for over a week, before I started it up.
When I got back home, I parked in the same space, nose pointing UP, then tonight took it out for a run, sticking close to home in case of problems. NO problems.
Could it be that parking for a while with nose down, drained part of the tranny or the TC and thus fluid wasn't getting to where it should be?

Parking attitude will not effect the hydraulic functions within the transmission for more than a few seconds UNLESS fluid levels are deficient.
Limp mode can result from poor electrical contacts. A "check up" Of the position sensor and the main transmission multi-plug might be a cheap fix.
Or heck, $2k for Great ride, Drive it over!
(kidding, there are too many rigs in the yard now!)

and being able to replace my bad tranny was icing on the cake.
I wouldn't do it unless you're buying another D2 and can use a lot of the parts yourself. You would be amazed how BIG a car gets when you take it all apart!
