Default I like Pentosin ATF1. Its the same fluid they supply VW/Audi. I get it locally for $13 per L

Default You want to use this fluid.

They also have the right filter and gasket for you.<ul><li><a href="http://www.autopartsworld.com/1997_audi_a8-v8-3-7l_a-t-fluid_parts.html">PENTOSIN from Autopartsworld.com</a></li></ul>

Default 4 speed or 5 speed trans?

Is the 3.7 the older 4-speed trans?

I think that takes different fluid, than the 5HP24A.

Default N/M, 5HP19FL, so the Pentosin works. And a transmission fluids links refresher:

<a href="http://www.zf-group.com/pdf/OilReferenceGuide.pdf">ZF Oil Reference Guide</a>

<a href="http://www.zf-group.com/pdf/AppChartpasscartrans.pdf">ZF North America Transmission Application Guide</a>

<a href="http://jie.com/oilref.htm">Esso ATF LT 71141 xref to OEM part numbers, towards the bottom of the page.</a>

There are various claims of compatibility for non-Esso ATFs out there, and differing opinions on this here on the board. I'll hold off on links on those, for now.
