If I can get some kind of canceling ring that has multiple sliding contacts, I should be able to do it with that.....maybe.
My next step is to take my steering wheel off, still chicken a little bit about taking the airbag off....I keep telling myself that it is triggered by an igniter, and if the battery is disconnected it can't get power to ignite.....
But it still freaks me out, never done it before. Kinda like jumping off the high dive for the first time.

Right now the 97 A8 has five sliding contacts, three clock springs and two slip rings.
The 00 with multifunction steering wheel has seven sliding contacts, five clock springs and two slip rings.
I need two extra sliding contacts, one for each "new tip switch", up shift and downshift. I can use an existing slip ring that brings (-) negative into the wheel.
It might be as simple as getting a self canceling ring for your car and retrofitting it to my wheel and use the two extra contacts for the the new tip switches (which use to be the radio changing station switches).
Now that would be slick and inexpensive!

...we had to get a "universal" receiver because the rolling code Genie openers we use couldnt be controlled by the first gen Homelink in our '86 Eclipse. The wall wart on that one puts out 28VAC to the receiver. Since Sears doesnt make anything and odds are the number of manufacturers for these things is very limited, the units are probably quite similar so the Sears probably runs off something like 24VDC internally the way this one does.
