Default What should one look for when buying a 97-98 4.2 A8 engine?

Hi guys,

I figured you didn't have guests from 90-80-CQ board for a while, and decided to sneak in here to see how you all doing. :-)

I assume that they made V8s bulletproof by 97-98, but wouldn't mind to be reassured about this. Any particular problems with oil leaks? timing belt tensioner breaking at a certain mileage (like with 1.8ts)? Any problems with coil packs or anything else that I don't know of?

Thanks in advance.

Default Besides a few oil leaks, nothing really to worry about

The timing belt and associated parts are good for 90K miles, if you buy an engine, replace the oil cooler coolant pipes, and if it was a high mileage engine, I would replace both head gaskets and the timing belt/parts while out of the car.

Gonna put it in your 93 90? If so, are you going to buy the wiring harness, and ECU?

There's a lot about the motor at the URL below.

Default Thanks a lot Paul, and that's a good link.

Researching all the options because it seems to me that it might be easier to put a V8 into the 90 instead of the 20v turbo. I am still checking out on how I will have to go OBD-II and so forth, but I will certainly get a complete engine with ECU and harness.

I would want to wait for Ben@achtuning to start on his swap so he can help me and answer more questions down the road. :-)

Thanks again.

Default There was a guy who did it with an ABZ engine....

....he's from Europe.

Here's his car.....I believe this is an 80, do you know what model is it?

He put in the engine in, and didn't use the wiring harness or any engine electronics. Used a simple fuel injection system that fired the stock injectors as I recall.

There are a lot of systems out there like that, it could be easier to do that. As far as doing with a stock harness/ecu, there would most likely be a ton of fault codes such as no communication with the TCU, the ABZ uses quite a few inputs from the TCU.

Anyways, here's a couple of pictures in the guy's car, he posted her on the A8 forum, so you'd have to do a search, this was about 5 months ago.

In the states we call that car a 4000, in Germany it is marked as a 90 I think...

Default hehe yea it is still a complicated swap, using a stand alone fuel management might make life easier

There was a 4.2 swapped in a Coupe Quattro as well. I will have to talk to Ben more about that. Thanks :-)

It was called both 80 & 90 in Europe, depended on engine/trim, just like the '88-92 80/90's...
