what type of signal is sent via the ecu to the tachometer?
I'm getting closer to possibly starting my v8 swap. I'm getting the ecu this week and the flywheel soon too. Basically that's all that I'm kinda waiting for before I test run the engine hopefully within a month. I've heard some mixed messages from other forums about the signals sent from ecu.
Is it a straight 12v signal?
Square wave DC?
CAN data?
I have some ideas to figure this out but figured I'd ask around before I start to tackle this issue. I've got enough on my plate where this is a small problem but i've got a little time to start thinking about it. Honestly I don't have the 5th connector/harness that includes the tachometer wire, rear 02 sensors and a few other items. My local yard may allow me to get the harness but I'm not sure I even need it yet.
Thanks
Josh

Don't think it's a CAN signal
Check out the pin outs for a prefacelift instrument cluster.
Wouldn't it be a lot simplier to put the ABZ engine in with a stand alone ECU? You are going to have a lot of fault codes without the actual instrument cluster from an A8 hooked up and no transmission for it to talk to.

https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/163512.phtml</a

$400.00 for parts necessary for motronic:
Honestly, I spent less than $400.00 for a Ecu,maf,2 new ignition modules, and two new o2 sensors. It's got a 60-2 setup on the crank pulley now too. Worst case senario it take me maybe a weekend to swap over to standalone. Not to mention all the datalogs i'll have via vagcom running it with motronic. Swapping it over to standalone is the easy part. The way I'm wiring the engine harness is so that it's got options. Do i think I'll need standalone? I don't think so to be honest. A few cars came in europe like the ABZ engine in particular AHK 32v S8 and S6+ cars. I did my homework, and I think i've got a few options before I need to go standalone.
