Your Suburban probably have leaf springs on the rear and torsion bars on the front.

Never had any springs or shocks replaced in my life (even with Italian cars which rust like crazy)... I think it's dependent upon the weather of where you operate your cars, extreme heat/cold, that may contribute to the weakening of steel?
