Road&Track reported recently that the S8 and the A8LW-12 will arive in about two years. It speculated that the S8 would have either a twin turbo V8 or a V10. It did not mention anything about an RS8. The grill in the picture of the A8L W-12 was striking and reminiscent of the Auto Union grills.

When is anyone's guess. Most, including me, are hoping that the next S8 will have the Lamborghini Gallardo's V10 (making it an S10?) If it does have the twin turbo V8, it's be called the RS8.

torque: thus the Gallardo engine might well be the one. If the engine is only around 450 bhp, the S55 will be the more powerful car. Additionally, by then BMW will be using the V-10 in the M5, if not an M version of the 7 series. Maybe the A8L W-12 will eventually get the Bentley Continental version of that engine.

The S8, however will not be a 5000 pound car. I trust that the Audi philosphy will not follow that of Bentley with its outwardly cavalier attitude about dynamic performance.

S is merely just a badge and very little (almost nothing) else. Because of this, S is by far best off as an being just an upgraded sport package for "regular" Audis with the top gasoline engine offering and not a seperate model series, IMO. RS, on the other hand, is a lot more than just a mere badge. On the C5 platform, the RS6 makes the S6 seem so lame, obsolete and unnecessary. That explains as to why the RS6 (with a twin turbo DOHC 32V 4.2L FSI V8 producing 500 hp according to AutoBild) will be the only high performance version of the A6 on the C6 platform.

bringing it up to 4112 lb. Aaargh, that's 100+ lb more than the D2 S8.
Another 110 lb is the last thing the 4400 lb A8L needs. All the horsepower in the world won't be any help when it's time to turn the steering wheel and make the additional weight in the nose change direction.

I just checked edmunds.com and Yahoo! autos and the current RS6 sedans curb weight is 4024 pounds. Where on Earth did you get 4,112 pounds for the RS6? Therefore, an RS8 would not weigh 110 punds more than an A8, A8L (both 4.2) or S8. The new A6 should be 200-250 pounds lighter than the current A6 due to all aluminum construction with the third generation of Audi's ASF (aluminum space frame). Most sources have indicated that the new A6 will have all aluminum construction with the third generation of Audi's ASF. Plus, Audi's ASF is now much more inexpensive to build.

Two turbo's, two intercoolers, larger radiator, more heat shielding, lots of plumbing -- 110 lb sounds about right, and it's all in front of the front wheels.
