Where can oil be leaking from? Whirling noise from the front of engine. Alignment question.

Took my 98 in on Audi assured last month to fix the oil leak and fix the whilring noise in the front (as well as many other things). They said the oil leak was from the oil pan and replaced the gasket. However it still leaks oil. drips from the plastic cover under the engine where the air scoop is. Looked at the valve cover gaskets and there does not seem to be any leak there.
1) Where is the most likey place for engine oil to drip from the engine front?
I also had a whirling noise that would come and go heard only in idle. They replaced the timing belt, water pump, idler pully, and yet the sound is there.
2) Any idea where this noise is coming from? Low enough that you can not hear while in the car.
When I bought the car, one of the rear tires was worn on the inside edge. For the last 8K miles that I have had the car, the front had worn well. I now have Paul W's recommended Pirelli P0s.
3) Can the rear wheel alignement be bad enough to cause that wear or was the tire rotated from the front where alignment may have been out at one time? Is 4 wheel alignment critical on this car or 2 wheel will do?

With regard to the oil leak. Try removing the plastic cover under the engine and then clean the engine with a pressure washer. Maybe this will help you locate the oil leak. Failing this ask for a dye to be added to the oil.

Here is the picture of one of them removed. It has a black electrical connector bolted to it. The D ring installed on these for the seal could be leaking, but would most likely drain on to the catalytic converter.
The right hand bank has only one cover, it has the hall sensor for cam position installed on it.
Get a four wheel alignment at the dealer, ask for the as-found and as-left readings. My A8 wears the tires so evenly it's scary!

Well I'm not too sure about the bigger 8 cars but I had a small leak from the front and it was the low pressure warning switch located by the oil filter. Part + labor cost me around $60 to fix it. I drive a A6 BTW
