behind the engine. Comes on when I start the car up. Goes away if I turn the A/C on. Comes back if I raise either temp control beyond the lowest setting. Does not change sound if I raise or lower the fan speed. Any ideas?

I have seen a problem similar in two 2000 A8's, there is a small pump that circulates the coolant when you turn the heater on with the car off.
It runs all the time, but isn't necessary when the engine is running.
The electrical connector is a two pin connector on the driver's side of the air intake.
Take the cover off that is around the master cylinder and you'll see an electrical connector (maybe two) just to the driver's side of the air inlet.....disconnect it with the engine running, does the noise go away???
