Default Who is ahead in technology (traditionally and presently)?

Many of you say Audi is. I always used to think Benz was. But to ME it seems like it's definitely BMW that's ahead recently. Not I'm sure now. Why do many say Audi?

FYI, it was Benz that invented (and patented most if not all of) the following:

Air Bags
Anti-lock Brakes
Crumple Zones
Seat belts I think (or maybe it's just seat belt pre-tensioners)

Default Audi has advances like QTR, aluminum production, 4 link front ends,

Tiptronic before everyone else except Porsche had it, Audi and Mercedes are still the only two auto makers to do full leather interiors ( everything that looks like leather really is leather ), uses organic dyes for leather in just the A8 alone !

Audi made the first production V8s in Germany. They had the first production FWD drive cars. First mass produced awd for passenger cars. First to use hydraulic engine mounts. The 5000 was the first production passenger car to have a cd of .29. First production car with 5 valve heads. First to offer a small car in all aluminum ( the A2 ).

Audi has been winning races since the first competition model was introduced around the turn of the century.

The plant in Germany also:
low emmissions waterborne paint system
hot wax body cavity coating instead of solvent based
recirculation of 95% of the water used
100% of plant packaging recycled
use of rail throughout facility

If you read the full press release on the new A8, you'll see we're in for more firsts;-)

All of this Audi knowledge makes me think you maybe work for the company. Only been checking out these posts for the last couple of days, but you seem to really have your facts on the issues.

Default This may be obvious (sorry to split hairs)

But there is at least two other cars that feature full leather, and then even fuller than Audi & MB.

Rolls Royce
Bentley

Sorry as a Brit, just had to get that in. Partly because the leather in those is just breath-taking.

Default Funny Story about the falibility of leather

I used to work in the automotive industry, sub-contracting for one of the afore mentioned maques from Crewe.

Sitting in an MPW estate (station wagon?) special with my osiliscope et. all; I asked why the leather on the roof had a seem in it above the rear seats. I was told that the distance from the front (where the roof meets the windsreen) to the poin in question was the longest stip of hide they could phisically get off a cow.

Made you think about blood a little bit really.

Default Ah yes. Guess I think of them as more one-off coach built cars;-)

We'll see what happens to them now.
