ANyone have an idea what this car is worth? Private sale? The dealer offered me a ridiculous $18,000 for a trade on a new Suburban. What's with that? IS that what I should expect?

Unfortunately, this may be all you will get, or a bit more. A private sale can fetch more. You could also try eBay, with a reserve to see what people are willing to pay. See post below on the A8 on eBay, link provided.
PS. That is why I lease, rather than own an Audi.<ul><li><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6005&item= 2450181913">http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6005&item= 2450181913</a</li></ul>

..I paid $24k for my 2000 with 70k miles. The 50k mileage '99's were selling in the same range then. I elected to get the newer model with the miles. The 99's are now two generations old (one face lift, one re-design) so they are suffering right now on re-sale.
If you are in a major metro area you might try the local paper classifieds for the low $20's range. If not, go for ebay a little lower ($20-$21k)
See where this one ends up...<ul><li><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2450183776&cat egory=6005">44k mile 1999 A8 on ebay now</a></li></ul>

As long as its a clear title and in good/excellent condition, you should expect to get in the $20s ($22K-$25K) depending on premium options. If you go selling it on EBay, expect to get less than a local sale. Trade-ins are typically the worst deal, especially with luxury cars.
Run a Carfax and have it ready for potential buyers. It really does make a difference.
Sites worth the time to sell on are EBAY.COM, CARS.COM, AUTOTRADER.COM, and CARSOUP.COM
LOL (lots-of-luck).

..a failed ECU. Somehow it got damp inside and fused a couple of pins that send the signal to fire the spark (or FI, I forget).
I replaced it (with a used one) and all has been fine since then. I did the tranny transfusion at 80k miles along with ALL the other fluids in the car. I have had zero other issues wih it.
The car is amazing, but I'll reserve my evangalism for other forums, I'd be singing to the choir here.
