Yes, replace the entire Torque Converter in order to obtain a quality Torque Converter clutch. These units are "closed" and are difficult to rebuild. A ZF certified unit would be the best assurance.
Now we need to source a supply for a group purchase and then form a que at Tozo's shop!
Then AW would have the hard numbers that would go along with the service.
We could dispell myths about "lifetime fluid",
Poor trnsmission engineering, and control systems.
Ain't knowledge a wonderful thing!

From time to time I just google "ZF Transmission" or the like. In this case, I selected an old link in my "Audi, transmissions" favorites folder. Fortunately, the link was active, and took me to the most recent documents. I doubt I would have dug much deeper than the front page if the original page was displayed. Lucky for us all I guess.

I'm not clear whether the valve body always also needs replacing or whether this was a problem particular to the car they referred to in the article; but I hear you guys talking about the valve body quite a bit, so I would probably change it while I'm in there rather that risk more labour $$$.

I have replaced the VB on my "99" with a later model unit. I can say there was a "change" for the better after the installation, but after about 15K miles, I have both hunt and thump.
Perhaps it was only the repalcement of the original fluid with Amsiol Synthetic that made the original improvement.
The VB is so easily changed out, I would NOT change both the TC and the VB at the same time.
The bigger question is, in light of all the F clutch piston seal failures, Does one go in to the tranny and replace all the rubber and wear parts while the transmission is out. I think so.....
Gabor what would you say? You have seen the insides ;-)

One of our customer brought a brand new TC when we rebuilt his tranny and it made no difference. It still had the dropout and hunt. I still had to rebuild and modify the valve body and the TPS.
