When I was growing up, we made fun of people that drove Audi or BMWs in Automatics. Were you one of those people that got teased? Paul was a teaser I can tell.
I think the cell phone killed the stick shift in America. My last 528 was a stick and my friends made fun of me for being able to drive, drink coffee, and use my cell phone. It took me three months to find a used 528 stick!! It would be like looking for a 6 speed A6 2.7t or Allroad. Your dealer would have four or five to one. They try to charge a grand more and when you trade it in they try to ding you an extra thousand. Damned if you do and damned if you dont!
My guess is they dont sell. MB brought out a 300SL in 90 in stick, did not sell, cancelled. Audi V8 Quattro stick, did not sell, cancelled. Jag XJS, very very few sticks, did not sell, cancelled. BMW 850, very few sticks, did not sell, cancelled.
In the premium market they dont sell in America. I think they should offer it through European delivery if you want the sticks. Its sad the cars did not sell. If a car comes in stick, you better beleive I will look for the stick. But I would also rather have a V8 auto over a V6 stick. Unfortunately, all of these V8s in America are automatics.
I was in Europe two years ago. I remember being in Stockholm and seeing a stick shift Audi parked in front of my hotel. I did a double take and was in total disbelief. When I got to Switzerland and saw the V12s, I was also in disbelief. I would never buy a 12 cylinder anything! But, the stick, now I think that may outsell a W12.

You can import one, or you can have one installed in your US spec car.
It's just a matter of paying the people who do the parts you can't! :-)
And once you see the costs, other cars start looking better - like, maybe a new A8L 6.0 W12 instead...

from an automatic-config ECU to a manual-config ECU. Something like taking a 2.7T ECU and then putting in my 4.2 ECU chip.
My concern has always been how I (and/or Paul, for that matter) could get the thing to pass our OBD-II emissions testing drill in Chicagoland. Might be easy, or might be a PITA.
The ME technical literature I have has a vague reference to there being only one "vehicle specific" processor in the ECU. The remainder is the drivers, supporting cast of processing, A/D convertors, etc.
But that is about as far as I've gotten on that direction of research.
