will 255/45 tires fit on stock rims?

I have the pirelli Pzero's on my car, but if you were to change to them in a 245/50/17, you will find your ride to become defintely firmer.
I don't know if that's what you are looking for.
You can see the tread on them in this picture, see how the tread is different on the inside of the tire versus the outside of the tire. The outside of the tire carries the load of cornering, where the inside of the tire moves the water out of the way on wet surfaces. On the other side of the car, they will rotate in the opposite direction. There is an inside and outside of the tire, but direction doesn't matter. (i.e. asymetrical)
And forget them once it gets below 40F, they get hard as a rock!
They are about $190 each, they've come down in price.

however the tires that I have been looking at so not come in the sizes that I am looking for. So I have been trying to find a size that will fit but also be the lowest speed error.

the Kumho Ecsta MX in 255/45-17 should be OK.
My A8/S8 tire options on audipages shows that an 8.5"-10.0" is recommended for the 255/45-17, with a design rim of 9.0". I got most of this rim data from Pirelli and Bridgestone.
But ... the Kumho MX specs show says that an 8.5" rim is the standard rim for their 255/45-17 MX (they don't list a range). Almost certainly, you could go 1/2" narrower without a problem. If you have any doubt, I suggest giving Kumho a call.
BTW: I like the looks of the MX.

Hey,
As mentioned by others, a 255 is really too wide for the stock 8" wheel.
While the tire may physically fit, you won't get any more performance
than a 245. In fact, you may get less performance.
I like Kumho tires.
Be aware that with a stock alignment, on the track you are really going
to punish the outside edge of the car. As you corner, the weight transfer
will cause the car to lean. The leaning will cause the tires to roll towards
the outside edge, which means that the inner part of the tire doesn't
contribute much to grip.
Running a wide tire on a narrow wheel makes that worse. Too wide a tire
and you can easily overheat the outer tread blocks. This can lead to
chunking (large chunks of rubber coming off the tire) and will ruin the
tire in a short time.
If you run on the track, use higher inflation pressures than for the street,
and CHECK YOUR TIRES OFTEN. If the track you are on has more left
turns than right (or vise versa) you may want to rotate the tires at the
end of the day.
Have fun,
Barry

With my S-03's, it's a very fine line between running overinflated and wearing out the centers ... and running underinflated and wearing out the outside edge.
After 6 track days on my current set, the outside edge definitely has the most wear. The one good thing about my acid washed HRE incident, though, is that when I remounted the tires, I swapped the tires left to right and vica versa. Now I can wear out a "new" set of outside edges. With a little luck, I might get 4 more track days from this set plus about 15k street miles.

I run a 255/45-17 Dunlop Sport 9000 for my summer tires without any problems. They look perfect on the 8" wide rims.
In the winter I run a 255/45/17 Sumitoma HTR+ all season tire that I found to work very well in the snow even though it was wider than what you would normally want to use in the snow.
I agree with you that there are not many good choices in the 225 or 245 width tires.
The 255/45-17 tires look great on the car and I have not had any abnormal wear on either sets of tires. I personally think that a 255 width tire is perfect for the size an weight of our cars.
