I'm looking for a set of 17"s for winter duty to replace my 18" Pie Plates and I found a set locally. I bought Goodyear F1 AS last winter thinking I could use them all year, but braking performance is close to dangerous for winter driving. This weekend I went skidding through an intersection at less than 10mph with zero traction on hard pack snow and ended up half down a small embankment into a corn field. Fortunalty I had no problem extracting myself. Thank you Quattro!

You would want 225 55 17 for a perfect fit. A4/A6 wheels are about 1" less in diameter.
Meaning if the wheels have tires already, they won't be the correct diameter.

I asked this q before I bought the S8 because I've been running the 7.5x17 Avus as winters for the past 2 seasons (on my B7 Avant).
My PO also had B5 S4 wheels. They fit over the Brembos with perhaps 2-3 mm clearance. Had em on for a week and SFSG. I will say that I had to remove some of the weights on the inside of the wheel (closest to the outer face of the wheel) as they made contact with the caliper (I believe)
But with an A8 you won't have a problem. Of course my wheels with 225/45-17 tires look a bit pimpin' (small), but they're fine otherwise ;-)

We know a lot of Audi rims work on the A8, but do the A8 rims always work well on other Audis?
I want to use my stock A8 17s on a 2004 A6 4.2. I figure calipers and offsets should be ok.
