Would timing being off misfire all 4 cylinders of a bank? Can it possibly effect only 3 in 1 bank?

For a pre-facelift, one of the Power Output stages failing will effect one bank.....
These POSs (rather apropos acronym LoL) are prone to failure. If facelift, this is not an option as there is no stand-alone POS (they are integrated into the coil packs).

search the forum. I think someone here had the same problem you and I have
but one of the symptoms that he had was the engine running a little hot. I change the timing belt on my car 35k miles ago. I only been having this misfire for a few weeks and a couple of thousand miles. But misfired only when the engine is at high rpm. I hooked up vag and zero misfire at idle. I bet that the tensioner is loose or something. I have to go back and check all the torques and redo the timing belt in a couple of weeks. But here are the things that I have done.
1) Change all the spark plugs
2) Clean out the MAF sensor
3) Check all the vacuum lines
4) Switch one coil at a time with a good cylinder
5) Change the entire coil from one bank to another
6) A bottle of Techron/2 full tank of gas
But the problem still remain. And I think the timing might be off a tooth or two.

I do not believe my timing is off but I'm running out of options. It only misfires under load in 4th
gear in 5,7 and 8 cyls...sometimes just 7 & 8 and occasionally only 8 and almost has me stumped at this point. I just don't see the relationship. I know my breather hoses need to be replaced, but don't think that is the problem. I just don't understand what happens by shifting to 4th that is any different than in 1st, 2nd or 3rd LOL. In 10 years of owning my 98, every issue has been a breeze to troubleshoot and fix. This one got me. When it first started happening it was always on a 1 mile long 45 degree incline on my highway drive to work.
I have done everything you have listed except cleaning the MAF because it looks fine when looking at it with the VAG. Swapped POS's too but nothing moved...One thing I haven't done is road test it with the VAG to see exactly what is happening under load when I hit the tip + to move into 4th gear at ~1200-2000 rpm's to cause this misfire. The only thing I know for sure is EXACTLY when it happens...then I get the flashing MIL.

Yes. Its one of the few things left to do. I'm really reaching but I did the fuel filter today....
Going to take it for a ride later, but seeing how my CEL flashes I would say fuel isn't the issue, but what the hell :-)
