It was my understanding that a 2001-2003 S8 is considered pre face lift..and I a have 1999 A8, so they should be compatible.

Facelift occurred in 2000, so 2000-2003 are all facelift.
2004 and newer are d3 cars.

so the breakdown is 97-99 prefacelift, 2000-2003 facelift.
This coincides with the 32v to 40v transition as well.

D2 S8 is a facelift A8 (00-03)...all same body parts...just a couple of different badges.

A 99 will need a bumper from a 97-99 A8.

so if the body parts are the same why wouldn't the S8 bumper fit an A8? Is the rebar different?

??????

Again:

01-03 D2 S8 has same body parts as 00-03 D2 A8...BOTH cars are facelift D2's...all body parts interchangeable.

97-99 A8's are PRE-facelift...bumpers and many other parts are NOT interchangeable with ANY facelift cars...US S8 included.

There are NO Pre-facelift S8's in North America....just '01-'03 FACELIFT.

Bumpers are not different between D2 A8 and S8, pre-facelift cars in North America were limited to the A8 only. Facelift cars in North America was available in both A8 and S8 guise, but all bumpers and panels are the same, no bumpers were unique to the S8.

The facelift D2 front bumper will physically bolt to your car, but it won't flow with your pre-facelift parts. To fit the facelift front bumper, you'll need:

01) Facelift hood.
02) Facelift grille.
03) Facelift headlamps.
04) Facelift under-headlamp trims.
05) Facelift fenders.

Not sure what that lot will run you, but I would imagine big bucks. Unless you find a car being parted out privately, not worth doing, at least from a financial standpoint. Even buying from a privately-parted out car, it'll still be costly. Add the cost of paint, you might as well sell your pre-facelift car, and but the facelift you want.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

I wonder why there's no edit function on AW?
