Default Yet another tire question (all-season recommendations for southern car)

I've been searching through the old posts about tire recommendations, and still haven't come to any decisions. I'm currently runing Michelins (MXV4) on the OE 17" wheels. They're getting worn, but not quite ready to replace them yet. I'm hoping to get thru till spring if we don't get much weather down here this winter.

-I don't want to go with dedicated snow tires, since we usually don't get much snow down here in North Carolina.

-I do sometimes travel up to Michigan and New York, and we do occasionally get snow and/or ice down here, so I don't want to go with a "summer only" tire.

-If anything I'd like to get an all season tire that's good in wet and (as good as can be expected form an A/S) snow. Doesn't necessarily have to be the best ultra performance A/S. Then possibly get some 18"s with summer tires (Goodyear F1 perhaps) next year.

Any thoughts on A/S for the scenario I described? Stick with the Michelins?

Default Check reviews on Tirerack

If you read my post below, I just decided on Pirelli P Zero Neros. Great reviews, and a reasonable price. I'm getting mine for $135/tire in 235/55/17. I'm in a similar situation to you in that although we typically don't get a lot of snow here (Lexington, KY), we will get enough winter weather to dictate that I run all seasons.

Default MXV4 .... why not put those back on ?

I just bought a set of these for general use and have used them on numerous heavy sedans with positive results. (good wear, nice ride, decent handling) They are a little loud on concrete but other than that i like them, plus you can usually get a good deal at sears/costco and then no matter where you are you can get them rotated/replaced.

(if you look you can find them in a wider than OE size)

Default couple of options

for 225/55 17s from tirerack:

Bridgestone Potenza RE92A
225/55VR17
$127.00 each (Special)

Continental ContiTouringContact CV95
225/55VR17
$115.00 each

BFGoodrich Touring T/A VR4
225/55VR17
$133.00 each

Kumho ECSTA ASX
225/55WR17
$90.00 each

I can only speak to the OE Goodyear Eagle LS, which are OK. Good treat life; just hitting about 30k miles with maybe another 5K left still. Getting a flat tire last weekend reminded me though that if you switch tire brands, make sure you fit the full size spare as well. Mixing tires makes for a nasty Quattro problem. I'm even worried right now about the difference in tread thickness between the spare and the tire on other side of axle.

Default Try Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread...

Just bought a set from Tire Rack, but I think Discount Tire where I had them installed and balanced will match their price or get close to it. It has a speed rating of 130 (H-I think), but it has very positive reviews and was recommended by the Tire Rack guy when I said I wanted a good wet/dry/snow tire with high mileage (I didn't expect to get all three). He said they are great and so far I agree. Forget all the bad things you've heard about most original equipment Goodyear tires these are new technology. Warranty is 80,000 miles. If I get anything close to that I'd be happy. Check them out on the T.R. Website. I think they were about $130 each and came with a $50 gas card too.
Good luck.

Default Avoid OE tires

Always the worst. I have tried the majority listed in this thread, and I have had issues with most. My Michelin HXMXM4 Pilots got bubbles in each one (Mass roads), and the price doubled on them in one year..

Try the Kumho ASX, or if you want to splurge $$ go with the Pilot A/S from Michelin. Everyone raves about those.

If you want serious bargain tires, go with Sumitomos. I have them now, I assume the snow performance will be similar to others. I switch to my Dunlop wINTERSPORTS soon anyways.
