Hi - cross shopping, and am able to get either one at the same price.
Thoughts on performance (how much worse will the A6 be?), room (can I squeeze 3 car seats across the backseat of the A6), and reliability (how flaky is the 04 A8)

3 car seats will be tight in an A6 compared to the A8 L with the bigger legroom.
I did have a 4.2 A8 to play with as a loaner a while back: <a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/c6a6/msgs/36783.phtml">cleek</a>

would be my choice, provided that it is CPO's by an Audi dealer. My experience with the A6 3.2 is only through a couple of week-long rentals through Hertz in LA and I found the cars to be very good in every respect. My experience with Audis includes an '08 A8 Sport, an '07 RS4 and an '00 A6 4.2. I would never own one without warranty protection.

I'd take the A8 on all 3 counts. I used to have an A6 and found the only way to get 3 car seats across was to put one up on the armrest. ( fun having three kids in carseats at once, isn't it?)
Due to its aluminum frame, the A8 weighs little more than the A6, so most of the extra displacement does go to performance.
If you get a cpo'd A8, you should find it to be a pretty reliable ride and somebody else has taken the depreciation hit for you.
Good luck.
