2003 A8 running rich
Hi Guys
I live in Stockholm, Sweden and I just bought a 2003 Audi A8, (European spec), to use as a winter beater instead of my 1973 AMC Ambassador...
Anyhow, after a couple of days of pleasant cruising the check engine light came on and I get these two codes:
17537 - Fuel Trim; Bank 2 (Mult)
P1129 - 002 - System too Rich - Intermittent
17535 - Fuel Trim; Bank 1 (Mult)
P1127 - 002 - System too Rich - Intermittent
Car runs just fine with no starting, idling, cruising, or w.o.t. misbehaving.
Worth mentioning might be that the car has some sort of "Power Chip" installed and of course a silly cone air filter that I intend to replace with an OEM assembly as soon as I can find a good used one. The exhaust is also modified with straight pipes all the way back from the cat's except for the center muffler thats still in place...
Any good ideas as to what might be the cause of my codes?
All hints on trouble shooting are greatly appreciated.
Thanx in advance

Welcome. AMC Ambassador is back a ways..even pre Chrysler merger, pre Fiat merger...
Rich down to 12:1 instead of around 14.+:1 still runs and starts well but mostly just burns extra gas. First try simple fixes:

yes, clean up air filter. If it is an oil type one, don't be surprised if MAF is fouled. You can try a spray cleaner for it. Codes on both banks (cylinder heads on all but a V10 or W12) suggest to me it is one of the components that affect the motor overall, not just one side or cylinder. If it was oil media filter and issue persists, you may need to look at diagnostics leading to possible replacement of MAF.
run some fuel additive like U.S. Techron or its Euro equivalents through it to clean injectors, valves, etc. Maybe two rounds over a couple of tanks of fuel.
What it is probably not is a vacuum leak, since that would show lean. Only if exhaust includes a non factory downpipe/header or manifold pre cat would I worry to much the exhaust has something to do with it.

If the power chip is some kind of add-on attached to the MAF then its basically a simple resistor which fools the car into injecting more fuel, the end result is the car runs to rich.
First thing I would do is get that "Power Chip" removed. The issue is obviously something before the intake manifold otherwise you would have either bank 1 or bank 2, rarely both.
After doing that get the codes cleared and see if it comes back, I don't think it will and the car will be fine.
Lots of people get fooled into buying these cheap "Power Chips" and end up with all kinds of odd faults.
