Hi, new to the boards but not audi. I have a question, I am about to pick-up my new (used) 2004 swb a8. Are there any performance upgrades (i.e. ecu tuning, exhaust, air intake) available, and which are worth doing?

A few have played w/ the exhaust. I'm not a believer that anything available on the intake side is other than marketing
I have yet to see a post where someone has tried Lemiwinks with a D3. Esoteric freeware that changes ECU parameters. Read the old S4 board and maybe C5 board (the 2.7T's) for more guidance. From experience it worked with at least the 4.2 in the C5, but I never seriously tried to hack it like a few did. Again, never recall a D3 post on it.

my other performance suggestions would be the following:
S8 swaybars
Vag lowering or links
Improved tires and lighter rims - Audi is notorious for heavy OEM rims and poor riding tires for some reason....
Custom exhaust - pretty straight stuff to get a good shop to fabricate... or MTM and Miltek have options.
jarger front brakes...OEM S8/ W12 set are occasionally on Ebay, or Brembo makes a 385mm kit. Mov'it makes the 400mm kit I have.
the SC'er is the newest and largest gain....and PES's pricing is pretty decent compared to the MTM and ABT options....
