Just a brief on this:
When the soft close motor goes south, it fails to drop the latching pin. Thus the latching or striker pin is elevated giving the impression the trunk won't close.
Causes people to start slamming the trunk.
The trunk latch (on the trunk lid) is a very simple device, motor operated with spring, to unlatch. But there is also a micro-switch that tells the soft close motor to activate. A Ohm test on the switch will rule that out. The switch itself is a good one. The motor on the latch (to open) has a limited life due to the magnets going weak That applies to all the little motors on the car, like the gas flap motor too.
My soft close system failed in the low position and I took that opportunity to pull the damn plug on it. No more complicated goofiness and ownership bliss If I can't close a trunk under my own power, sorry I cease to be a human being!

If the pull down mechanism fails, the trunk will still latch closed. Yours doesn't latch at all so with 99% certainty it's the trunk latch has failed. Very very common problem and usually rears its head in colder temperatures. WD40 will temporarily bring it back to life, but replacement with the updated part is the only permanent fix.
