Default 75k service

My dealer is recommending a $3,500 75k service!!!
wow. this includes pretty much everything, including a new timing belt, plugs etc... plugs flush fluids etc

Can I wait for this? any advice would be very much appreciated
I'm thinking about. Thinking about non-dealer service with a local german car specialist.

I also need to get new tires right now and with tires it's over $5,000
BTW dealer is recommending hankook ventus V12 tires to replace my pirelli P6 which were awesome maybe a little noisy but very good tires. Has anyone tried these tires?

2005 A8L 76,000 miles

Thanks
Scott

That seems a little high. I'm having it done next week on my 05 A8L with a little over 75K and they are quoting me $2,200 but am planning for $3k to be on the safe side.

A local German shop quoted me $600 for the belt only, but I had to rent the tool myself for $400 from an online source. That didn't give me a warm fuzzy.

Everyone thinks I'm nuts for having the dealer do it but I plan to keep this vehicle for a long time. Since mine had excellent service records, all done by Audi, I want to have this service done by them too so that everything is checked out. Although my preference is to support small businesses I feel there is more leverage with a dealer if they screw something up. The next major service is at 115K so that comes out to about $0.055/mile or ~$600/year.

I don't think either of our A8's would fall apart if we waited a little. That said, I was a certified Honda mechanic for our family motorcycle dealership and don't feel comfortable pushing the limits on big items. Especially after a near miss almost destroyed the engine in my Ford by waiting too long.

Audi is supposed to do a LOT of things at 75k that a local place may or may not. See ScheduledMaintFlipChart_2005.pdf

No doubt others here have more experience with Audi than I do and I've read of higher mileages before the service.

Last week the dealership did a 4WA, mount/balance, and put 4 Conti Extreme Contact DW's on for $1,300. I'm in LOVE with those tires now. Could've got it cheaper at Discount Tire but they wouldn't have given me an A4 as a loaner and my service writer said "bring it in every 5k for rotate and balance, we do it for free so you should take advantage of it". They also completed all the outstanding TSB's on that trip.

That's my 2 cent....

The Hankooks are pretty well rated on Tirerack but $1500 is pretty outrageous for a set of them. You could have them shipped to a local installer for $700 all in. Even if it cost $200 for M&B, the dealer is still overcharging you by $600. I would assume a similar ripoff(40%) on the 75K service from that shop. I'd go to the indy if I were in your shoes.

I have those hancooks on my A8, their great but yeah 1500 is way high. Just got a quote from a friend who is an audimechanic for my TB, $900 out the door having it done pretty soon, but I still have about 3k until 75k.

I paid about $1700 for the 75K service at my local dealer. You are getting ripped off. I would think about calling the Audi rep for your area and complaining. There is a standard hour allocation for that service in the manual and they are just adding cost to rip you off.

$3500 for that service is ridiculous. I sat there and did it at an Audi dealer, with an Audi mechanic in under 3 hours for the entire job.

They're raking you over the coals on this one. Go elsewhere.

lol. $3,500 for 75K service?

Lets say all of the parts in total come to $1,000 (which it shouldn't)

Then let's say Audi charges you a labor rate of $150 per hour(absurd) to complete the 75K service in 10 hours(rape). This scenario still leaves you $1,000 under the $3,500 they quoted you.

If i were you, i'd seriously call back, record the phone conversation you have with the guy who quoted you the price, or get him to put it in writing, then contact corporate Audi, District Attorneys offices, Better Business Bureau or whoever and get those guys investigated, prosecuted for fraud, corruption and money laundering. There is no way they can provide you a "by the books" justification for $3,500 on a 75k service

You should tell us all what service they performing on your vehicle. We could be misunderstanding something.

You should get a written estimate of that quote and then scan and post it up here so we can all spin our heads at the ludicrousness of it all!
