Everything worked perfectly, then bluetooth began acting up. Searched forums and found others with bluetooth issues had success by updating to version 4610. When I updated, it hung up mid way through and since then nothing works. Searching here and saw Williebone thread about replacing MMI 07 Control Head. Said he can provide with Component Protection disabled... "plug and play"... Sounded like a good place to start.

What do you think?

I'm going to buy my ownVCDS. Any recommendation on what and where to get?

Thanks!!
Dealer's grease monkeys are the same as any other monkeys, they're there, using VCDS printout to justify for their incompetency, you should read up about MMI and search here, although you need to know the keywords for your problem.Start with "MMI black screen" or you can read what I summed up but still haven't covered everything. You don't need VCDS because you will replace the wrong thing just like the dealers do, so get yourself an optical plug and start plugging or you can shell out $7k if you don't want to do it + $300 for VCDS. I'm sure you can use the money for Xmas presents that you haven't gotten or given.
Cheers,
Louis

Hello Scott,
As Louis stated, get the optical loop tester, and as you stated that the BT started acting up first, I would lift the carpet on the front drivers side to expose the BT module and look for signs of wetness, and at the same time installing the optic loop bypass on said fiber optic connection at BT module.

Also fill in your location, or tell us where you are located so someone may be willing to help you.

And I would love to hear what you said to the dealer in response to his/her statement of "multiple control units faulty. CD changer, front display control unit, sound system amplifier, radio and telephone control unit." and " recommend replace all the units at a cost of $7K.".....

Just buy it off of Rosstech's own website to ensure you are getting the authentic article. It can't remove CP, but it can help you diagnose your issue. I would wait to do any more diagnosis until you get the cable, the HEX CAN unit should be just fine for your needs. I am certain that the dealer is wrong, the odds all of those components require replacement is ridiculously small.

What I said to the dealer? Ha! To be honest, I was so blown away already by the sheer lack of knowledge that I didn't take it seriously. Given how pleased I am with the engineering of my A8L I was expecting high caliber technicians.

Filled in my location and would greatly appreciate anyone near Denver / Boulder CO who can offer assistance.

I've ordered the Optical loop and will let you know what I find when I pull up the carpet.

Thanks!

And please also run an 'Autoscan' which checks all the ECUs in the car and post the results, so that we can see what you have, what version the hardware and software is and what fault codes are showing ...

Hi Scott; while you wait would you like to say a bit more about how the MMI 'acted funny'?

It obviously still worked as you were able to try and run the software update!

And what happened when you tried to update the software with the CDs that made it subsequently 'bricked'?

Julian

BTW, you might like to retry running the swupdate as sometimes that fixes it!

Hi Julian,

This is the chronology with my MMI:
- Bluetooth connection to my phone stopped working. Every 20 seconds the radio would cut out for 5 seconds. MMI was trying to connect bluetooth
- Ran 4610 update CD #1 and it hung up in a never ending loop. "flashing drive" "0% progress"... repeat. "flashing drive" "0% progress"... repeat.
- Canceled update in spite of warning "May damage your system". I had no choice. It was doing the same thing for hours.
Kept trying the update with same result. But now my MMI ran very slow. Screens loading VERY slowly... none of the sources work, i.e. radio, CD, etc.)
- Kept tinkering with it and some how it popped into bootloader. I did not make it happen as my hidden green menu is not enabled. I think the system just puked and went to bootloader.
- The #1 CD was in and it said it was updating to 4610. After reboot, success! I thought I was out of the woods because it now said version was 4610.
MMI operating system was back up to full speed, screens all loaded quickly. But... still none of the sources would work. So tried the software update again (thinking perhaps the MMI main unit updated but not the other devices)
- No good. Still would not run the update and back to crippled operating system. Screens load but very slowly. It reboots constantly.

I took it to the dealer to get them to enable the green screen so I could run bootloader again and try reinstalling the software. Could not believe my ears when the shop manager told me "never heard of it"
They spent all of 10 minutes on trying and gave up.

Here's where I think I am (emphasis on "think") I have a hardware problem, probably the bluetooth, plus a software problem due to the failed 4610 update. When I get VCDS and optical loops I plan to enable the green screen, enable and run bootloader to try and get my main unit back on it's feet. Then I will see what VCDS says and rebuild from there.

Any thoughts? I've found very little commentary on using the bootloader and would love to hear from someone with that has experience with it.

Thanks!
