Anyway to tell if timing belt was changed?
My 05 D3 is coming up for a timing belt change, but my question is, is there anyway to tell if my belt has been changed already? I bought the car with just under 70K on it, and dealer had no knowledge of timing belt job. Are there any markings on the original timing belt? I've checked the belt, it looks fine and there was a brand and part # visible on it. I did not see and Audi/VW markings on it. Thanks

What brand and part number? You can perhaps look it up.

Pull both covers off and look at the water pump pulley & housing. Do they look "newer" than the surrounding engine block? if so, that's a good indication that it was changed and no sane person would change the timing belt and not the water pump or thermostat. Plus the idler pulleys and hydraulic belt tensioner. JMHO.

Sane
Obviously the previous owner was sane.
He/She sold the car before anything start to break or needed replacement.
even in the best case scenario I doubt everything has been changed, if assuming the water pump/thermostat failed at the most probably just the failed parts got replaced.

I've also never claimed to be sane. Many say that I'm insane.
