I was still hoping to hear from someone who has taken the arm rest apart as to how the black plastic pins in my earlier post go in.
Here is a pic of the hole they insert into. the only thing I can think of is that they are glued in, which seems like a pretty poor choice for a hinge that has up and down and lateral forces on it.
Following up on my previous post, despite superglue-ing in the two black pegs that hold the armrest lid cover in, they eventually came loose again and the cover started to wobble again.
This time i drilled a hole through each one and secured it with a screw and nut, and super glued them as well.
There is a hole in each peg, I used a drill bit that was the same size as the hole (I think it was 5/32 in bit) to drill straight through the peg, and then continued through the metal housing.
I found a screw and nut that was just the right size to go through. I secured the nut with lock washer and thread locker so I would never have to do this again.
The additional screw and nut would hit the damper mechanism -- that for a short part of all of these cars early life allowed the cover to soft close. Those pistons have longs since lost their pressure, so after being unable to find a replacement piston, I just took the thing out. I did this by using a needle nose plier to unscrew the piston rod from the its plastic connector. If anyone does find a replacement piston, please supply a source.
Once I got the screw and nut secured I cut the end of the screw short with a Dremmel.
Reassembled the plastic shroud around the armrest, which took more time than anything else... there are all these little plastic clips to align and snap in at weird angles. This armrest is one insanely over engineered complex part, which unfortunately can only be purchased as a whole if anything breaks.
