Default Audi MMI Update 4140 problems figured out

Well, I figured out why mine got stuck on the Audi loop screen. It turns out the car has to have AT LEAST version 5 of the navigation installed on it. I'm not quite sure how to fix this... is there a hard reset somehow? here's a link proving my findings

http://www.jeffgalla.com/work/Braman%20Audi/pdf/customer%20pay%20mmi%20system%202008%20update%20(2 ).pdf</a

There's a couple of us in this same boat, actually. This is the first that I've seen this PDF, but the following line doesn't look promising...

"In case of a component breakdown during update programming (communication can't be established, even after hardware resets), replace the affected module and claimed it as a W2 claim."

And then there's also this line, which looks like it says before you can update to MY2008 MMI, you must update to MY2007 MMI if your car is MY2004-MY2006...

"An interim update to Zug 730 (MY2007 MMI, Update CD 4F0 906 961AB) is mandatory in case the current Zug is < 730 ( = MY04-06 vehicles, which were not updated in the past)"

Default Version 5 refers to your Nav disk--the one in the trunk unit

If you have either 1 or 4, you have to buy at least 5. New versions come from Navteq. I see versions 5 or 6 a lot and e bay, presumably being dumped by people moving to newer revs.

Default I ran it tonight fine

Once I figured out to unplug the iPod (which the instructions omitted altogether even though they said to unload all CDs), it took the AMI update too. I came direct from last year's 3360 rev. and have a v.8 Nav disk, so it was a straight shot from the more recent revs.

Default The link on the main post here is really great for some info on this finally..

I bought the CD from Clair last week--all of $5.49 w/ discount. Part 4L0-906-961-H. No, I don't know how to make copies for reference, though anyone nearby in the SF Bay Area/Peninsula who really can't get the disk can check in about borrowing it.

Still not clear what exactly gets updated as far as the user experience. The instructions imply to me they are basically getting MMI compatible with more phones (my Motorola V3 worked just fine already), and getting some Nav stuff in French. Can you spell maybe Quebec came after Audi for more French to go w/ the ever popular needless extra French lines that make the nanny stickers stuck all over USA cars now twice as big?--make that used to be stuck all over my car... Also some clean up of nav commands and phone call competition. Instructions erroneously say altitude display was added in MMI. It's there, but it already was in the last rev to start with.

When I ran it, it took a lot of update time at the start to update XM from the file names. What it improved there I don't know. The instructions fail to mention XM (or Sirius), but it upgraded both the "Bolo" file (from 8 to 9) and the "App" file (from 570 to 670) It took a really long time on the "Handyvorb2" part (I'm guessing phone?) of the upgrade.

Moved MMI to 4140 version, from version 3360 in my case. Nothing obvious there either when I clicked through the normal functions, though those could have been the files for the Nav/phone interaction (muting) fix.

Default Here's the translation

If you already upgraded MMI in the past year, typically to fix the "surround sound settings get lost overnight" problem as we know it, then you only need the one new disk upgrade if you want to bother with this. Or if you don't recognize that recent upgrade (3360) otherwise, look for either of two things, each of which tell you you are on the 3360 rev:

1. no lawyer screen right on the front end of using MMI, but instead only deeper in the menus, especially w/ the phone interface, or

2. altitude display choice for map display settings

If you are on the old revs, then as the link attachment points out, also get disk 4F0-906 961AB and run that first. I don't have that since the dealer did mine already, but that's probably another <$10. Per the other posts and the link, you need to be on at least version 5 of the Nav map disk for this to fly. I can't decipher though if you need newer Nav disks only for 4140 or also back to 3360.

Default Re: Anyone have an answer though?!? Audi techs?

This is all well and good information but does anyone have any idea how to SOLVE this problem? Has anyone figured out which module has been hosed during the update? Or is it as simple as loading the Nav disc into a looping MMI and it goes forward with the upgrade? Any Audi techs here?

As a software developer, I find it hard to believe that anyone allowed an update disc that didn't check for a minimum version before updating firmware... talk about bad design. Probably the same guy who signed off on a cup holder next to a $2000 electronic part. And I thought the Germans were supposed to be smart?

Default Wait, can you back up a step

I don't see in here what "problem" you are trying to solve that we can try to help. You are posting into the middle of another thread where the guy says it is "figured out" rather than that he has a "problem." You might want to restart a new thread. A prior one where this rolled out was hopelessly cluttered up with everyone wanting a free disk to find the messages that had any substance if by chance you posted in or around there.
