I paid a little over $3K for mine (Platinum non-Audi) and they started losing money on me about 4 months ago, when the repairs PLUS DEDUCTIBLES I paid up to that point exceded the price of the warranty.
There are several excellent posts in this forum that discuss whether a warranty is worth it or not. It really boils down to this: Do you believe the repairs during the coverage period will exceed the price you will pay for the warranty?
For me, the "bet" was on yes. And, although I'm a terribly unlucky gambler (You won't see me in any casino), this was an informed risk.
As mentioned by others, it also depends on the level of wrenching you are willing to do.
Read up. And, definitely shop more (the price you were quoted is WAY out of line).

Neither me nor my wife have jobs requiring travel, yet I drive about 16k/yr and she drives about 20k.
That's what happens when you live in the 'burbs.

A word of warning. I have the Audi Pure Protection Platinum warranty. Even though it clearly states it covers control arms and bushings, in the fine print on the contract, it states that wear items are only covered to 50,000 miles. Control arms Bushings are are considered a wear item and are NOT covered under the warranty. I know this for a fact, as I just had mine replaced (62k miles) and the warranty would not cover it. ...It also doesn't cover airbags.
You can guess my opinion of whether the warranty is worthwhile or not.

Well know fact is that insurance business is one of the most profitable businesses of them all. Not that well known fact is that their risk is backed up by very sophisticated mathematics that makes it not risky at all.
Everything opposite for the opposite party, but we can still gamble. Some people win in Vegas too.

when i purchased the car it had 74K on the clock.
i also purchased Premier VSC program (i think the best thing ive done) . i actually feel bad for them . and was about to light my car on fire.
there isnt one thing that did not go wrong.
for the 2 years of ownership the bill came up to $15K they covered everything.
of course the work was done at the STEALER and they are the biggest rip offs on the face of the earth. and they raped the warranty co.
oh yeah it is a 05 C6 A6 4.2
other then staying in the dealer more the in the street i love it...
