Audi S8 news
According to German car magazine "auto motor und sport", the S8 will be introduced in Germany at the end of the year, with a 450 HP V10, a modified Lamborghini engine.
The W12, which has the same HP rating, will be positioned as a comfortable (chauffeur-driven?) car, while the S8 will be positioned as a GT style alternative.
In Europe, Audi has also introduced a new 4.2L V8 turbo diesel with 326 HP and about 480 lbf feet of torque. 0-62 mph time is 5.6 seconds.
No word on US availability of either engines in the magazine. They also mention availability of the 3.2L V6 FSI engine in the A8, which will not make it to North America.
Photos and the original German Text are available by clicking on the link, photos can be viewed by clicking on the "Audi S8 & Neue A8-Motoren" link on the left of the article.

550 hp 5.5L FSI V10 is a much safer bet for both the S8 and the S6
The B8 S5 with a 450 hp 4.5L FSI V8 (most likely with an 8,500 RPM redline) is supposed to come out in the Fall of 2008 for 2009 while the B8 S4 (with the same exact engine as the B8 S5) is supposed to come out in the fall of 2009 for 2010. As a result, the FSI V10 in the pricier, heavier, larger and more upscale C6 S6 and D3 S8 will have to have 5.5L of displacement. Also, the FSI V10 in the S8 and S6 will have to produce 550 hp and 413 lbs/ft of torque and will have to have a 500 RPM higher redline than the 4.5L FSI V8 in the B8 S4 and S5. Because of this, there may not be a C6 RS 6 after all. Most likely, the S8 will be 120 lbs lighter than the S6 due to much greater use of lightweight metals in the S8 than in the S6. Therefore, the V10 in both cars can easily get away with having the same exact displacement, hp, torque and redline, despite the S8 being larger, pricier and more upscale than the S6. Of course, the W12 in the A8/A8L will have to receive the FSI upgrade, will have to have 6.5L of displacement and will have to produce 650 hp and 516 lbs/ft of torque. The difference in displacement between the V8 and V10 and the V10 and 12 cylinder cannot be less than 1L. At the same time, the differences in hp and torque between the V8 and V10 and the V10 and 12 cylinder cannot be less than 100 hp and 80 lbs/ft of torque. It would be a fatal marketing mistake. But the 12 cylinder engine can get away with having a lower redline than the 4.5L FSI V8 and 5.5L FSI V10 due to a 12 cylinder engine being much more for docile driving and much less for sporty driving than the V8 and V10, both of which are much more for sport driving than they are for docile driving.
