I purchased the Dension gateway 500 - the ipod works well, and also the Dension 1500 bluetooth module. According to the very poor instructions, I should be able to use my bluetooth phone through the MMI using the phone functions of the MMI. This does not work at all... I can get my phone to pair through the Bluetooth Audio potion of the gateway menu, and it does connect via Bluetooth, but the sound is poor, and there is no way to use the phone menu of the MMI. I do have the very old analog onstar system, which is non functional... Does anyone have a clue how I can get the Dension to work?

I'm not sure about the Denison part, but I got the Bluetooth phone functionality through a BMW Bluetooth upgrade module in the old Motorola phone dock. I'm guessing your MMI is still trying to work through the OnStar rig.
