Default Bluetooth and voice commands stopped working

Any suggestions on things I can check, using my VAG-COM or otherwise, to possibly see why these functions stopped working on my car? The car no longer pairs with my phone and when I press the voice command button on the steering wheel, I get a "button inactive" message in the LCD dash display (between the guages). All was working fine until about a month ago. The car had not been in for any service prior to then so its unrelated to any other work on the car.

Thanks in advance,
-Mark

I'd use VCDS to check for "module not reachable" meaning a possible ring break.

SDS should work regardless of the BT.

My gut says your BT adapter croaked.
Also remote possibility a low battery could have messed up some coding - but not likely.

Post up an autoscan and we can look it over.

I will run the VCDS and report back. In the mean time could an MMI error cause these issues? As far as I recall I have version 4160 in the car (hope I have the numbering right on this).

Could it be a ring break though? No other aspect of MMI would operate if a ring break were present. I know because on really hot days one of my lines contracts just enough to break the ring until the air conditioning has been on for 5 or so minutes. I should really chase that down. :-)

Anything is possible, but I think that's a pretty stable/new version of MMI.
Mine was 27.40 and had no problems.
Is anything else weird going on, or changed recently ?

Good point - MMI would probably be rebooting all the time.
Have seen some weird things on the VCDS forum and mailing list though...

Don't feel bad - I took a scuff plate to the dealer after trade in that was sitting in my office over a year !

Mine drops calls once in awhile, and gives the message "your phone may not be connected properly" when it does. I'd love to find a fix to make this 100% reliable....

I ran the VCDS scan last night. It showed a whole series of errors with the telephone. Since some of the errors are improbable to be happening simultaneously (like antenna and microphone both being shorted to ground), the question is whether something is unplugged at the module or whether the module is bad. Where in the car is the module located? Also, the strange characters for part, component and revision numbers suggest something is up. Please have a look:

Good info to start diagnosing.
Next I'd clear any DTC and run another autoscan to see what's left after a drive/ignition cycle.

Yeah I'm not liking those funky characters either.
The time indication should be an actual date too.

I *think* the module is under the carpet on the driver side - someone chime in here please.

Looks to me like the module is fried, possibly electrically or just plain shot.
Any water ingress recently via sunroof or into floorboards ?

Default BT Telephone module location

The BT Telephone module is located in the driver's side footwell (in a plastic box under the carpet).

From your description of the problem, I would agree that it sounds like the module went bad. Is the car still under warranty?

Car is not in warranty. The part runs about $400. No water issues in the car that I know of as I would have a musty smell. I could clear DTCs but since the Bluetooth isn't working its unlikely that would do much. I had a few "telephone not properly connected" messages sporadically for two months before it stopped recognizing the phone one day. I will check the connector to the module but assuming its clean and locking in place I don't see any diagnostics in the VCDS that I could run for more in depth analysis of the module. So it may be that trial and error of a new module is the only way I can trouble shoot this. Is the module located midway in the center of the foot well under the brake pedal area or is it located behind the kick panel on the left side of the foot well?
