CPO RS6 or new A8

And just about puts the final nail in the coffin of my RS6 thoughts. The only saving consideration would be if I were able to pick one up very cheaply, such that I could drive it a while and then get my money back out of it...
Otherwise that also makes the D3 a very interesting choice as well, though I might still buy a D2 S8 and wait for the new S8 or at least the 'fishmouth' D3 swb...

albeit with a naturally more modern look inside and out. Between an RS 6 and S8, there's not a great deal of difference in the 'era' of the interior styling either. Like you say though, a bargain RS 6 might be fun as a gap-filler; mine was bought because I liked the idea of the world's fastest production sedan (as it was at launch) on my driveway!
I've always liked the D3 though, shortly after I got the RS 6, Audi UK invited me to Millbroook proving grounds to pre-test the D3 before it was launched in the UK. We had 3.7 and 4.2 V8 short and long wheelbase cars, and got to take them round the "Alpine" test track, the high-speed bowl and a set of slaloms set up in dry skid pan. We also had a professional driver take us for a very fast run on the handling circuit.
One of the pro drivers took us with the suspension in Comfort mode, and made us do the slalom the same way, and although the tyre noise was a lot more apparent, it held very well. In Dynamic mode, even standard suspension did a great job of making the car go where the driver pointed it. Sport suspension in Dynamic mode was very akin to the D2 S8's suspension, in fact the 4.2 SWB D3 was very close to the S8 apart from the lack of a sensation of speed because the D3 is so smooth in comparison.
I came away very impressed, and I doubt my RS 6 would have held up very well against the 4.2 sport D3s on the Alpine track.
All I wanted to change was to have the raw 'grunt' of the RS 6 in a D3, which Audi have kindly now provided!
