Default engine oil level check light every other day???

Hi Guys,

I have been getting this low engine oil level light almost every other day. I open up the hood, check the dipstick and it's ok. Light goes away, then in 2 days, comes back on again and it repeats itself all over again....

Any ideas what could be wrong? What kind of sensor and where is it? Is it easy to replace?

Thanks in advance....

Probably a wonky sensor. It's typically located in the side of the oil pan.

#10 in this diagram

It requires an O-ring so it would be logical that it is outside.

My Bentley is offline right now and I don't have erWin docs for D3 or I'd look up procedure.

Default I did this on my 2000 A6/C5 4.2

It was on the bottom outside of the pan. Took < 10 minutes. Held in by 3 simple 10mm hex head bolts. Pretty much requires an oil change unless you are super quick since it opens up about a one inch hole right in the bottom of the pan.

I had this happen in the summer two years ago. It was so hot out that the oil was burned or dropped in level. I changed the oil and that light I kept getting went away. At that time the oil was at about 6-8k roughly in it's cycle. I was reccommended to use a heavier oil in the summer instead of the 0W40 I was using; but I never did and the problem never came up again. Although, I'm sure aw 5W40 or something of the like will work better for the very hot summer months.
